Reviving Water Security in Kaler Village, Alwar, Rajasthan
Kaler village in Alwar district once struggled with severe water scarcity, where dry borewells and defunct hand pumps disrupted agriculture, livestock rearing, and daily life—especially for women and girls.
In 2022, PHD Rural Development Foundation, with the support of Rotary Club, launched a community-led water revival initiative. Eighteen water harvesting structures now capture 133 million litres of rainwater, reviving groundwater systems across the village. Average water levels across nine wells rose from 0 ft to 40 ft, increasing borewell supply from one hour to 6–7 hours daily.
The intervention restored 45–50 hectares of farmland, benefiting 331 households, boosting farm incomes, improving livestock health, and strengthening food security. Today, Kaler stands as a living example of how collective action can turn water scarcity into lasting sustainability.
